Previously known as Rangoon, Yangon, which was the capital of Burma until 2006, is a place where the fading grandeur of British colonial architecture stands alongside gleaming sacred temples and pagodas; where you can spot locals wandering barefoot and chewing betel nuts; and where you can brush shoulders with purple-robed monks while walking the busy streets in search of many cultural gems of Yangon. To enjoy in comfort everything that this fantastic city has to offer, make the most of your visit by traveling at the right time of year. Visit Yangon with tours Indochina
Yangon’s Seasons
Yangon’s weather is a typical type of tropical monsoonal climate, which means that it is humid and hot all year round. Like other countries in Southeast Asia, Myanmar in general and Yangon in particular has distinct dry and rainy seasons, however, the dry season is split into a prolonged spell of very hot weather and a period of cooler weather. Wintertime – from November to February
With a wonderfully warm temperature ranging from 19 to 33°C (66 to 91°F), with December and January averaging 25°C (77°F) during the daytime, Yangon’s winter is not a winter as people in the northerly parts of the northern hemisphere would expect. But compared with the rest of the year in hot and humid Yangon, it is cooler and much drier, too, and it is the reason why this is the busiest time to travel.
If you are visiting Yangon around this time, another thing to consider is the Shwedagon Festival taking place around February or March (its timing depends on the Full Moon). A riot of dancing, drama and mouthwatering local food, it celebrates the spectacular shimmering gold Shwedagon Pagoda, the iconic landmark in Yangon.
Dry Season – March to May
Running from March to May, the dry season in Yangon is oppressively humid and hot. April, when temperatures can get up to 40°C (104°F) is the hottest month. If you do end up paying a visit to Yangon during this season, the Thingyan Water Festival provides you with some relief from the heat. Marking the Buddhist New Year celebration, which involves people taking to the streets to throw water at each other, symbolizes washing away bad luck from the last year. The weather in March is characterized by gradually rising daily high temperatures, with the average temperature of 28.8 °C (83.84 °F).
