It is said that these vast containers, which weigh up to six tons, were left over from a victory party after a war in the 6th century, but no one knows the truth: who made the jars or how they got there: and as the sun begins to set, the enigma grows steadily more eerie. You can take the longer road journey from Luang Prabang through hill tribe villages and rural scenery or fly here from Vientiane or.

Travelers are allowed to visit three sites. Site one, which is closest to town and the largest of the three should be one of your stops. Furthest away, the smallest, site three is arguably the most scenic. Site two, which is half way between the two and perched on small hills either side of the road, may not be included in your itinerary.
