Since air links and roads improve around Laos and the region, it was never easier to come travel Laos. You are just a short and often even cheap flight away from Laos or Luang Prabang if you are coming from Bangkok or Hanoi.

TRAVELING OVERLAND TO LAOS
ENTERING LAOS FROM THAILAND
Entering Laos via Chiang Mai:
If you are traveling from Chiang Mai, it is possible to take a bus to the Thai and Laos border towns of Houay Xai and Chiang Khong on the Lao’s border. This border crossing links over the new-built Mekong Bridge and farther by road to Houay Xay on the Mekong side towards Laos. This route gives travelers an access to great cruises and tours on the Mekong to Luang Prabang, or overland to Muang Sing and Luang Namtha into the northern Laos. Overnight buses which travel the route to Nan province in east Thailand and then cross the border to travel Laos near Hong Sa is an available alternative Route by bus from Chiang Mai to Luang Prabang. The connection is receving new bridges, well supported roads and a pretty fast access to Luang Prabang. In 2017, the improvements of this route are ongoing and will become better and better.
Entering Laos via Udon Thani and to Vientiane
Travelers can also take a bus or train from and to Udon Thani. From there, travelers can easily make their way to Nong Khai, the Thai border town to travel Laos. It is a must to go through the Friendship Bridge into Vientiane, Laos capital city. Laos travel tours
ENTERING LAOS FROM CAMBODIA
Since 2010, it has been possible to go across overland from Cambodia into Laos. Stung Treng is the nearest Cambodian town, and the border is a 90-minute bus or speedboat ride away. You can also go into Laos at the entry point of Dong Crorlor in Cambodia. There are buses connecting Phnom Penh up and the border. However, during the rainy season (June to October), this route may be a little more difficult.
Warning: When crossing the border here, there may periodically be a change of buses. In that case, getting on the bus that has your luggage so that you do have the possibility of losing them should be a good choice. The are some companies which have been known to lose luggage by switching buses a few times during your ride.
ENTERING LAOS FROM VIETNAM
It is not difficult to arrange transportation to Laos from major cities in Vietnam. Aside from providing direct flights, good bus connections into Laos are also provided in Hanoi, Hue, Hoian, Saigon and other cities. It is also possible to purchase bus tickets in all major agencies and also get your visas there. On most ports/border points, visa on arrival for Laos is possible, please check with the official websites and the immigration before you go.
Warning: There has been some conflicing information about going across the border in Tay Trang with a Vietnamese motorbike. It was at one point possible to get into Laos after crossing the border with a motorbike and paying a small fee, but there are now some reports that due to vehicle registration issues, tourists are denied to get access into Laos with a motorbike from Vietnam. It may be easier to avoid this crossing way, and when you arrive inside Laos, wait to rent a bike.
TRAVELING TO LAOS VIA TRAIN
Travelers now can go directly from Bangkok via Nong Khai (Thailand) to a train station in Laos, near Vientiane thanks to a new train connection. This connection makes it possible for you to directly travel from Bangkok into Laos to the Thanalaeng train station. Here on the immagration post can you enter Laos. Until now, to get into Vientiane, Laos, this remains the cheapest and probably most enjoyable way. Not only convenient, the night trains from Bangkok to Vientiane also provide a fun experience if you have time.
