Weather overview

Vientiane in nice weather

In spite of experiencing two distinct weather seasons: a dry season (October to late April) and a wet season (May to late September), Laos can be visited all year round and Laos’ weather system is relatively straight-forward compared with much of Asia with no coastline to influence things. There are variations in temperature within each season with the early wet season (May and June) typically seeing the highest temperature of the year and the dry months leading up to the wet season (March and April).

Also, the temperatures throughout the country are affected significantly by the altitude with much of the country at a level that decreases the average temperatures of this country by several degrees Celcius. As a general rule the south, where at its lowest, in the Mekong River valley, temperatures in excess of 35°C are not uncommon and humidity is higher between March and April, is at a lower altitude than those in the north, central and eastern regions.

Rainfall is often short lived and the temperature is still very hot in the early months of the wet season (from May till July), whilst the rains become more constant and can be heavy at times, especially in southern parts of the country in the latter months (from late July till September). It is often advised to have a fleece or jumper for the evenings, when there is a tendency for it to get quite cool, throughout the country in all but the hottest months of the year.
