It will cost around US$20/day + petrol to rent a motorbike in Luang Prabang. But for those who have never driven a motorbike, Luang Prabang is not the place to start learning.

Neither the traffic nor the speed is the main issue. Poor driving skills are the issue. Forget your assumptions of rules of the road. Over the past few years, the number of vehicles (especially large trucks) has exploded and drivers are not accustomed to sharing this road. You will ride on a hilly 23 km one way. You will need a good bike with gears and set out very early if it is a hot time of year. Beware that during hot-dry season (February-April), it will be smoky and dusty. Cycling one way and catching a tuk-tuk back or vice-versa may be one option.
