This 4km hike up to Vat Phou Salao is a must-do for those who want to capture the best view in Pakse. Very early in the morning or late in the afternoon, you should get on a tuk tuk to travel from Pakse out to the hill with the enormous golden Buddha and then, either continue to the right on a concrete road or stop in the parking area and take the stairs all the way up to Vat Phou Salao. As the second half of the wooden stairs are in bad condition, take care if you are walking! It is your chance to step out onto the gorgeous viewing platform and take your deep breath in the fresh evening air. Your reward is a breathtaking panoramic view from the enormous golden Buddha seeing over Pakse and the mighty Mekong River. From there, you can even spot the Bolaven Plateau. Before returning back down the stairs or walking the 4km road down the mountain, keep on discovering the Vat Phou Salao! In case you are not feeling very energetic, it is advised to ask your tuk tuk to stick around at the top.

  • How to get there:

You can take a tuk tuk from Pakse town to get there. To catch the best views, it is wise to visit either right after sunrise or in the late afternoon before sunset.

Khone Phapheng Waterfall – the pearl of the Mekong is situated only 13 kilometers away from the Cambodia’s border and to the east of Don Khon on the Mekong River. There the Mekong Cascades go across a vast fault line that slopes in a curvilinear pattern and causes the river to run through with amazing power. Due to its great power and steep descent, Khone Phapheng is the largest waterfall by water volume in. If you are traveling from Pakse, take Route 13! It will be a fun journey to get to Khone Phapheng!

 Bolaven Plateau in the southern region of Laos is well known for its gorgeous scenery, peaceful ethnic villages and untouched corners. This plateau is probably best known for housing some of the most magnificent waterfalls in South East Asia such as Dong Hua Sao (aka Taat Fang) and Tad Fane. The elevation of this plateau approximately ranges from 1,000 to 1,350 meters above the sea level and getting cool, especially at night, the weather there is generally milder than the other parts of Laos. It is its fertile plains that allow local farmers there to produce some of the best coffee and tea in this country (coffee remains the biggest agricultural export of Laos.) Since this area has almost unlimited trekking and daytrip opportunities, tourism has become another important source of income for locals.

The spectacular Tad Fane twin falls thunder more than 100 meters down the steep cliffs into a gorge situated a few kilometers to the west of Paksong Town in Champasak Province. The scenic rainforest place is part of a huge national park where wild animals including monkeys, elephants, tigers and leopards live. Among the 300 bird species in this area, hornbills are the most beautiful ones.

  • Location:

Bolaven Plateau is located in the Champasak Province’s northeast region, which cover parts of Sekong, Attapeu and Salavan provinces. Pakse in Champasak is the main town to use as a base.

  • Opening time:

These waterfalls can be visit all year round. In the rainy season between July and October, the waterfalls are even much more impressive. If you have a chance to visit these waterfalls during the months from October to February, you can witness the harvesting of coffee around the plateau.

  • How to reach there:

Besides a small airport, Pakse also has a huge bus station with regular connections to some other parts of Laos.
