From Hanoi, Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Siem Reap, you can experience the international flights of the Luang Prabang International Airport. On arrival at the airport, visas are available. It is about 4km (2.5 miles) from the airport to town, and transport arranged through any hotel is the best choice. Otherwise, you can pay for $5 to hire a tuk-tuk. Going the other way, it should cost you about $3 to have your hotel or guesthouse organize a tuk-tuk for you.

Crossing the border at Chiang Khong in Thailand to Huay Xai and taking a boat up or down the Mekong through magnificent and scenic countryside, is one of the nicest and most popular ways to get to Luang Prabang. It is recommended to take the slow boat which may take you 2 days. On this boat, before arriving in here on the next day afternoon, you will spend an overnight in the small town of Pakbeng, a village with basic accommodations. The slow boats in Huay Xai leave from a pier just next to Immigration and cost $20 for the 2-day journey. Going the other way, slow boats to Huay Xai arrive early at the riverside quay after leaving from the pier at the end of Thanon Khitsarat in the center of town.
