Phou Khao Khouay is one of Laos’ most beautiful nature reserves. This extensive sandstone mountain range is only 40 kilometres northeast of Vientiane. It takes around two hours to get to the park by local bus or one hour by private transport.
Declared a Protected Area in 1993, Phou Khao Khouay covers 2,000 square kilometres spanning three provinces: Vientiane capital, Vientiane province and Bolikhamsay province. It stretches around 80 kilometres west to east, and 40 kilometres north to south, bordered by the large Nam Ngum reservoir/artificial lake in the northeast. The Phou Khao Khouay, the Buffalo Horn Mountain, lies in a national park, an area with spectacular sandstone cliffs and river gorges and abundant wildlife. The park offers a variety of contrasting landscapes and natural beauty, from evergreen mixed deciduous, dry dipterocarp forest to large pine tree stands to extensive bush land and bamboo groves, from sandstone plateaus to steep rough mountain slopes. The national park offers you stunning scenery comprising of waterfalls, allows you to trail along the jungle paths and witness its abundant and rare wildlife.
The park is also home to rare mammals such as sun bears, tigers and elephants. Visitors can see tropical butterflies and orchids and many kinds of wilds in the forest because the park is home of threatened species including tigers wild elephants and gibbons. During the rainy season, from May to October, the reserve comes alive as the forests become green and lush. The waterfalls then reach full flow and vibrantly colored butterflies fill the air. Though there is almost no village inside the park, true Lao rural life can be experienced by visiting some communities right at the edge of the park. The friendly village of Ban Hat Khai is a good place to learn more about the genuine lifestyle of the Lao Loum people.
