Having the original name in French is Palais Presidentiel, the Vientiane Presidential Palace, official capital of Laos constructed in the year 1973 under the directions of the Architect Khamphoung Phonekeo is regarded as a building of the French colonial era having inspiration of style beaux arts. A talented local architect known as Khamphoung Phonekeo designed this building but it was not completed until long time later due to political change brought about by the takeover of the communist Pathet Lao in 1975. Finally the Presidential Palace officially operated in the year 1986 but it is a pity that it was only used as a venue for government functions and anniversary.
French style
The Laotian President does not live here in spite of the main function of this Presidential Palace is used as residence of the President of Laos. Instead, the leader of the country decided to set up his residence in the District of Ban Phonthan. Although the President of Laos does not live in the building, the Presidential Palace is not open to the public and therefore you can only admire the stunning building from the outside.
In spite of its modest functions, the Presidential Palace is a well-known landmark for its absolutely elegant charming art style architecture combining with tall porticos and shaded balconies.
