Atop the hill
Situated in the heart of Luang Prabang, Mount Phou Si is gracefully rising in the middle of the center of the town. Since you get a spectacular view of the surrounding verdant mountains, the river and the little but lovely rooftops nestled below, it is no doubt that 328 steps leading up to Wat Chom Si on top is a popular spot for sunset. Around its rivers is where life in Laos revolves and at the end of the day, you can head to Luang Prabang’s riverbanks to begin to understand this. Coming here, you can observe these picturesque scenes women wash their hair and prepare for meals, fishermen return home with their full catch while kids splashing in the rapids.
Stretching from Kitsalat Road aka “the Morning Market Street” and moving away from the peninsula, the local beer bars near the end of the Mekong River road are the best choice if you are looking for a sunset beer. Get out onto the river for a sunset cruise is also a favorite way to enjoy sunset. Head to anywhere along the Mekong River road or the boat landings and you will no doubt be approached by a boat driver. This is fair to pay for the going rate of for a typical slow boat (with a roof) of about 100,000 kip an hour. It is possible to ask to see the boat first but unless you are serious, do not enter into negotiations.
Book a sunset cruise with Banana Boat if you want a comfortable experience and organizing a boat is daunting. On this boat, you will be served beer and snacks. Moreover, you can also get an amazing view of town from the other side of the river as the trip stops at Chomphet Temple.
Approximately March to June, during hot-dry season, due to the dropping of water levels, a beach forms at the confluence of the Mekong River and the Nam Khan. If you want to see kids playing football, boats puttering by and novice monks doing back flips into the water, it is an ideal spot.
