The Bolaven Plateau, whose elevation ranges from about 1000 to 1350 meters above sea level, is an elevated region in Champassak province in Southern Laos when you travel Indochina and Laos
Not only being an important agricultural area which produces one of the best coffee in the world, the Bolaven plateau is also a rich agricultural and cultural area, crossed by several lovely rivers and amazing waterfalls.
Tad E Tu Waterfall
Among these waterfalls in Bolaven, Tad E Tu, which is taller than Tad Champi but not nearly as tall as Tad Yuang, falls in the middle at least in terms of size. Tad E Tu is home to the Falls View Resort, which is one of the most famous accommodation choices along the Route No 16. And to reach the waterfall, you need to go through this resort.
Park your bicycle and slowly walk down the steep stairs to get to the waterfall base. It is required to get up close and a full view for some rock hopping through muddy marsh, but the slipperiness comes free of charge – always be careful and watch your step! Even in the dry season, you can go swimming at Tad E-Tu.
Tad E-Tu is located 35 km east of Pakse and 15 km west of Paksong. Like all the waterfalls, the road off of Route 16 is unpaved and the last stretch before the entrance is very steep and slippery with gravel. Do take care when riding your bike. Laos tours packages
Tad E Tu Waterfall, which is located along the Road 16E, KM 35 (15 km west of Paksong and 35 km east of Pakse) can be accessible through a small and steam path and stairs. There is a small pool at its bottom warmly welcoming you with some refreshing swimming chances.
Tad Champee Waterfall
Located opposite Tad Fane waterfall, between Paksong and Pakse at KM 38, Tad Champee Waterfall is about 3 kilometers far away from the main road. There is only one single cascade in the Tad Champee but its pool offering some refreshing bath making it well worth your time.
The Tad Fane Waterfall
Probably being the biggest twin waterfall in the Bolaven region, the Tad Fane Waterfall is where the water drops over 100 meters! Tad Fane Resort, a friendly lodge nestled within some tense vegetation and overlooking the gorge of the Tad Fane waterfall, is where you can get the best view on this waterfall. To reach the bottom of the falls for a closer look, it is required a small walk of 15 minutes.
Tad Yuang Waterfall
A bit farther along the way to Paksong at KM 39, Tad Yuang Waterfall comes with a nice picnic area at its top to pause and take in the views. At the top is a view point allowing a gorgeous panoramic view over the whole area. Following a path to lookouts at the top, middle and bottom of the gorge, you can enjoy many vistas of this amazing waterfall. Thanks to the work of volunteers who tried their best to develop this area creating safer viewing platforms and other amenities, Tad Yuang waterfall has recently become more accessible and tourist friendly. Therefore, make sure to spend time visiting this waterfall on the Bolaven Plateau.
In spite of not being the highest waterfall on this Plateau, it is just as postcard-like. Though it is possible to cool off in the pools, remember to take care around the rushing waters and do watch your step maneuvering the slippery staircases as well.
See and do:
- Swim in the pools below and above the waterfall
- Picnic at the top of the falls
- Take part in an interesting trekking tour through the forest and nearby waterfalls
Please note:
- Be careful of the current if you want to swim at one of the beaches or waterfalls.
- In Laos, only neat and modestly dressed visitors are appreciated. Be aware that Lao people consider nude swimming or sunbathing to be impolite. Women are highly recommended to check what the locals around you are doing and wear a sarong over your swimming suit or keep a shirt on.
Tad Phasuam Waterfall
After leaving Pakse, turning left at KM 21 and continuing for a farther 15km then you will reach Tad Phasuam Waterfall, which is on the way to Tad Lo in Salavan province. After swimming in this beautiful cascade which is in a U form, you can also visit the small cultural village nearby.
